Geeked Out

So I was watching Star Wars: Episode 3 at 3 in the morning last night and I got to thinking about some things that bug me about Star Wars.

1. In every space battle the ships, debris, robots all act as though they are flying through atmosphere, not space. Things get blown away as if there is wind. In episode 3, a giant command ship loses it's engines and proceeds to fall out of space onto a planet....wouldn't it just continue in whatever direction it was going?

2. All the ships have engines that allow for vertical take off, so why are most of the ships shaped like planes? The don't actually have to get lift. The exception that I can think of is the Millenium Falcon...no wings....flies just fine.

3. Jedi fights: If jedi's have the ability to levitate massive objects, why is it that when they fall they don't just levitate themselves to keep from hitting the ground? In episode 3, Anakin is hanging from an elevator shaft by his hands...why not just levitate? Same goes for the fight scene with Yoda and Sidious.

4. Why is it that Darth Vader knows Luke is his son, but in Episode 4 doesn't realize that he has captured his own daughter?

5. This one pisses me off almost as much as the space battle one. There is no way in hell that Obi-Wan and Anakin can fight on the lava planet. They would fry in a second. But, there they are, jumping platform to platform 6 inches away from molten lava.

All gripes aside, I like the series. I decided to do a list of my top five favorite characters from the star wars universe.

1. Yoda...by far
2. Obi-Wan
3. Han Solo
4. Darth Vader...not Anakin Skywalker (he sucks azz)
5. Princess Leia

Honorable mentions: Admiral Ackbar, Watto, Greedo ( I always liked him), Jabba, Lando Calrissian, Boba Fett, General Grievious

Dishonorable mentions: Luke (he's so damn whiny), Anakin (same reason), Jar-Jar Binks, Salicious Crumb (Jabba's little pet thing), and of course, C-3PO.

1 - If the ships were suspended in space by some kind of anti-gravity engine rather than being in orbit, that would make sense. Otherwise, you're right.

2 - Even though some human aircraft have VTOL capability, it's much more efficient to use the air for long flights. I would imagine that the fighter spacecraft have both the anti-gravity engines as well as control surfaces for use in atmospheric flight.

3 - Duh, you can't use the force to levitate other people who are also in control of the force.

4 - Leia is the illegitimate daughter of Amadala and Obi-wan.

5 - The force can be used to keep the air around the Jedi a cool 72 degrees farenheit. You don't ever see them sweat, do you?

Two names I would add to your list are Princess Amadala and the Emperor.

#3....yes you can.....they throw other jedi all the time (see Obi-Wan being thrown by Count Dooko in Episode 3)

#4. I always thought something was up between those two.

#5 That's a cool idea

I agree about the emporer, but not Amadala. While I recognize the inherent hotness of Natalie Portman, I don't like her character that much. Maybe it has something to due with the fact that most of her scenes are with Anakin....I always fast forward through those now, makes a much more enjoyable movie.

how did i miss this post? have i really been THAT busy?

i agree with most of what A-ron says on 1-2
but issue #3: remember when Luke fell down into the carbonite container in episode 5? He zipped right out of that the minute he fell in - with the force. But i wonder if it's something to do with the force being in every element around you. Including the air. But maybe there's not enough force floating around while hanging in mid-air to manipulate.
issue #4: Amidala never told Anakin he was having twins. he thought he only had 1 kid.
issue #5: Maybe molten lava is a lot cooler in a galaxy far, far away. Just like every planet they were on had breathable air. At least Star Trek CHECKS the atmosphere!!!

and I thought Amidala was a good character as well. it was unfortunate that the episodes 1-3 took more time showing computer animated battles than actually building sympathetic characters. i felt like i didn't care about ANY of the newbies - and only enjoyed the oldies, cause i got to know them better in episodes 4-6!

Point #4....yeah, he didn't know there were going to be twins...however, the reason he knew Luke was his son is because he sensed it through the force....same thing should have occured with Leia. Before you say "well, Leia didn't have the force" remember Luke's comment about the force being strong in his family "my father had it, I have it, and...my sister has it". Wow, my geekness knows no bounds.

p.s. Good point about breathable air. I forgot to list that part.

` Also, you forgot to mention that sound can't transmit through a vacuum (because sound is transferred by the motion of matter), so one could not hear the cool laser sounds in space unless they were inside of the ships.
