Reel Horrorshow
I'm full swing into the Halloween mood. I went out and bought 6 new horror movies for my viewing pleasure. They have prompted me to make a post about my top 10 horror movies of all time. I was going to list all the horror movies I could think of and systematically reduce them to ten, but after working till 7:15 tonight, I haven't the energy. So, here goes.
10. April Fool's Day
9. Night of the Demons
8. Lost Boys
7. House of 1000 Corpses/Devil's Rejects
6. Return of the Living Dead
5. Nightmare on Elm Street
4. 28 Days Later
3. Evil Dead 2
2. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
1. The Shining
Okay, let the booing begin. This list was compiled in a matter of minutes, and I'm sure I've left out some great movies. Actually, I had a hard time narrowing it down to 10. I kept coming up with other movies I liked. Two off the top of my head that I didn't include because I don't consider them "horror" are American Psycho and Rocky Horror.
Honorable Mentions go to Milo and Otis, Babe-Pig in the City, The Care Bears Movie, Pretty Woman, Beaches, Sweet November.....all truly "horrific" movies.
So, don't like mine? Add your own to the posts...and don't forget to mention what rank they would be.

oh yeah.....I didn't add A Clockwork Orange because I don't feel it's a horror movie....although it is sincerely a bad ass flick.
Another great one that came to me today was pet semetary. That totally should have made the list
I think that 'A Clockwork Orange' is a horror movie.
I would put '28 Days Later' at the top of my list.
I would consider 'Evil Dead 2' as more of a comedy than a horror movie.
name and rank, name and rank, if you wish to opine
oh yeah, it doesn't have to be just straight horror, it can be funny as well....as long as it's ghoulish.
This is tough, because there are so many different kinds of horror movies. How do you rate a "funny" one vs. a seriously scary one, and what about the ones that WERE scary when you first saw them but now are ridiculous? Here goes:
10. Witchboard. The first horror movie I can remember watching at slumber parties. It totally scared us about using an Ouija board. Even scarier is the fact that there have been two more made. Bonus: the chick from all of the White Snake videos is in it.
9. Maximum Overdrive. I know. But it really made me afraid of trucks and I still don't trust them.
8. Salem's Lot. The first genuinely scary horror movie I saw in my youth. It got me hooked.
7. Shaun of the Dead. I know, it's mock-horror, but it manages to still have all the elements of a good zombie film without being too silly.
6. Terminator 2. I don’t like machines having too much power. See #9.
5. Silence of the Lambs. Freaked my shit out at the time.
4. Shining. If it's good enough for The Simpsons...
3. Saw/Cube (tie) Just saw “Saw” and it was better than I expected. X-files with gore. It reminded me of “Cube,” where people are put through trials to see who survives in a Social Darwinesque experiment.
2. 28 Days Later. Well made, scary and Cillian Murphy.
1. The Last Supper. I'm not sure if it's horror, comedy or drama, but maybe that's why I can't ever find it in stores. The villains are liberal grad students. Eeek!

Good call on Maximum overdive and Salem's Lot. Maximum always made me feel uneasy watching it as a kid....especially the green goblin semi truck. Salem's Lot was also very creepy. The book is a thousand times better though. Silence of the Lambs I wasn't quite sure if I'd fit it into horror....I tried to narrow mine down to slasher and monster flicks, as opposed to criminal investigation type movies.
10. Sleepy Hollow -this wasn't really scary, but I loved the visuals and the actors
9. The Changeling - I am still scared of wheelchairs after this one
8. Aliens - classic
7. Hellraiser - I don't even remember which one was my favourite, but I love Pinhead
6. Uzumaki - this was a bizarre Japanese movie inspired by HP Lovecraft, not really scary, but weird, and good
5. Ringu/The Ring - I like both the American and the Japanese versions, they were different and good in their own ways.
4. The Closet - This was so creepy, very psychologically disturbing
3. The Dead Zone - Christopher Walken, as a psychic? It was scary.
2. The Believers - I've posted about this movie before, spiders in my cheek, ugh.
1. The Exorcist Three - I love George C. Scott, the all time most scary things from any movie that still haunt me are that lady walking down the hall from the room with the white sheet over her, and the grandma pulling the HUGE clipper thin out of her purse trying to cut his daughter's head off.
1.Silence of the Lambs
oops, messed up, since I put up two #1, I'll add a third - The Shining, that was so good, too.
Ok, sorry, but one more that should have been on there was Jacob's Ladder.
Hmm...
I like most all of those choices, but here are a few others:
10. Re-Animator
9. In the Mouth of Madness
8. The Fly (Brumble-fly)
7. Misery
6. An American Werewolf in London
5. It
4. Phantasm
3. Cemetary Man
2. Day/Dawn of the Dead
1. Dead Alive
Honorable mention to The Siver Bullet, Near Dark, Night Breed and Children of the Corn - which scared the pee outta me when I was young, and i completely agree with Hellraiser, The Shining and all Evil Deads. There are just too many!!!!
I really want to see The Audition - has anyone rented that yet? i've heard it RAWKS!!!
Cassie!!!! THank you! I was looking all over for the name of that, I couldn't remember the name and kept calling it "The Interview". Damn, that was so creepy, that was my number one, but when I couldn't find the name I gave up. It was really good, and bad, ewww, just watch it.
And sorry, I must ammend my list, the name on "the closet" is actually "ClosetLand"
I bought Dead Alive, but haven't watched it yet. I saw a bit about it on tv and it looked fantastically gory. Cassie, I agreed with most of your pics. Some of those I thought about putting up there, but went with ones I can really watch over and over. I still need to see re-animator. I can't believe you put "It" up there. I didn't even think it was that good back then, and it's even worse watching it as an adult. It's a shame, I loved the book. I must have read that thing 6 times or so. I love King books, but they don't seem to translate into movies very well. I would love to see a 7 part movie of "The Dark Tower"....but they would have to do it justice....each movie would be have to be a minimum of 6 hours long.
well....i'll admit, i haven't watched It in a while....i DID love the book, though.
I thought it was completely scary at the time of viewing, but I think it's mainly because i am scared of clowns...
I agree with the King books not translating into movies. i was completely disappointed with The Stand.
and i totally forgot about closetland! i LOVED that movie!
'Misery' and 'The Fly' are good picks Cas.
Mindy and I though of 'Jaws'.
Dead Alive was B.A. that's bad ass to those of you not in the know. It definitely would have made the list had I seen it before I created the list.
